What is a Design Challenge?

A design challenge is a structured formulation that explains the desired solution for a specific user group's problem and gives a summary of the targeted performance of the solution. The role of a design challenge is to give a brief understanding of a solution to people not involved with the project who can gain an idea of the tackled problem. The problem-solvers, creating the solution always refer to their design challenge to ensure the project is going in the desired direction.

Design Challenge Structure

Design a [form of solution] to [enable users in [context] to [perform activity] in/with [target performance]

Design Challenge V1 - Project Proposal

The design challenge below was created before the beginning of the internship as a result of initial discussions with the client. The design challenge was created broad as there was no deep knowledge of the target audience and the main problem they were facing.

"Create an installation that uses innovative technology to reinforce the innovative character of the FHICT Innovation Lab building and give the students the opportunity to get their minds off their work from time to time, so that they can relieve the stress and regain their inspiration. The solution is targeting the Fontys TQ building because the assignment is targeting students to feel inspired to go study on sight by creating a more creative surrounding environment." ~ from Project Proposal

Design Challenge V2

The design challenge below was written at the end of Phase 1 - DISCOVER, after gaining different insights from the client, various literature sources, and the potential target users. The design challenge is part of the Project Plan but after further analysis of the gained knowledge of Phase 1, the challenge had one final edit, which was not added to the project plan. Design Challenge V3

"Design an innovative Interactive experience to enable users of the Strijp TQ Fontys Building in need of a momentary break to have an accessible way of getting an effective mind rest in the goal of boosting their productivity and overall well-being during their time at the building."

Design Challenge V3

The third and final design challenge version was created at the end of PHASE 2 - DEFINE, and gives the specific problem and concise target group and context.

"Design an innovative experience to enable student groups in the Strijp TQ Building to have interactive encouragement to take their breaks away from their working table with the goal of reducing the overall floor noise in the OIL working space."
